Join us for a dynamic three-day AMACO Mid-Range Glaze Intensive with Expert Jennifer Hoolihan at The Village Potters Clay Center!

Have you been working with commercial glazes and wishing you understood them more deeply—how they work, how to control them, and how to unlock their full creative potential?
Do you want greater success, richer results, and multiple techniques for designing expressive surfaces? No prior experience using Amaco products is needed?

Then this workshop is absolutely for you!

Get ready to dive deep into color, texture, and experimentation as we explore an incredible range of AMACO glazes, including Potter’s Choice, Kiln Ice, plus Celadons, Satin Mattes, the new Crawls, and Phase glazes for truly magical layering.

Local potters may know our amazing guest instructor, Jennifer Hoolihan, from her days working the Highwater Clays as their glaze chemist, She now uses her skill and expertise to help ceramic artists across the country create their own unique surface designs using AMACO's extensive line of products.

Over three immersive days, you’ll experience a powerful blend of demonstrations, hands-on making, glazing, decorating, and firing:

  • Day 1: We’ll kick off with exciting demonstrations on glaze application, layering strategies, and surface decoration using a variety of techniques including wax, mid-range majolica and glaze trailing. You’ll begin glazing 6 to 8 of your own small bisque pieces or test tiles. We will load our kiln at the end of the day and fire.
  • Day 2: Continue experimenting with glaze combinations and textures on remaining bisque pieces as we prepare to load the kiln again in the afternoon. You’ll have the opportunity to try out a wide range of AMACO products and push your creative boundaries with expert guidance.
  • Day 3: We’ll open the kiln as a group and examine the results, providing an invaluable chance to learn from successes, surprises, and everything in between. Then we’ll shift into a hands-on session with Ceramic Inks, printing on both bisque and leather-hard clay to expand your surface vocabulary even further.

What To Bring:

  • Please bring 8-12 small pieces of bisque along with a couple of leather hard pieces for day three. Tumblers, small bottles, and forms made from 1–2 lbs of clay are ideal. Please note: We are not able to accommodate large pieces for this workshop. The focus is on exploring surface-design possibilities, and the pieces you fire will serve as test examples you can use to inform and inspire your future work back in your home studio.
  • You may also want to bring a sketchbook, an apron, and your curiosity.
Jennifer will provide brushes, glaze supplies, underglaze pens, wax, some extra bisque and lots of fired examples.

This workshop is a rare opportunity to explore dozens of AMACO glazes, learn powerful layering techniques, and see your results fired in real time.

Come ready to test, discover, and leave inspired!

Class Recommendations

  • Inclusivity: We are committed to maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for everyone. We value inclusivity and kindness.
  • Footwear: For your safety, closed-toe shoes are required at all times in the studio. This protects your feet from dropped tools, clay, and other potential hazards.
  • Hair & Clothing: We recommend that long hair should be tied back or tucked into a cap, and loose clothing should be avoided. This prevents them from becoming caught in moving equipment like the potter’s wheel or slab roller.
  • Restricted Areas: Some spaces in our building are private working studios for other artists. Please enjoy only the spaces designated for HOW student use, and do not enter any other areas unless invited.
  • Nonsmoking facility: Smoking/vaping are not permitted anywhere inside our clay center.
  • Weapons-free facility: To ensure the safety and well-being of everyone in our community, firearms and weapons of any kind are strictly prohibited on our premises, whether concealed or openly carried.

Cancellation Policy

To provide you the best experience possible in the workshop, we restrict the number of registrants. By registering for a workshop, you understand you are making a commitment to the instructor and reserving a spot that someone else could potentially take.

Student Cancellation

  • John Britt does not offer refunds for his workshops. However, if possible, The Village Potters will attempt to fill a canceled registration spot with a student from the waitlist. If the vacancy is successfully filled, the initial registrant will then have the option of a refund (minus a $75 administrative fee).

TVPCC Cancellation

  • In the rare event that a class is canceled by The Village Potters Clay Center students will be given the option of transferring their registration to a different or future workshop, receive a credit on their account equal to the value of the workshop, or receive a full refund.
