Creating pots that pour is far more intricate and far more exhilarating than you might expect. These vessels ask for harmony in balance, proportion, and function, and when all the elements come together, they’re exciting to make, use, and behold. In this lively, hands-on workshop, you’ll dive into both traditional and contemporary pouring forms, crafting pitchers and at least one teapot while exploring spouts, handles, bases, and rim treatments in all their expressive variety. Expect a week that stretches your skills, sparks new ideas, and delivers a whole lot of fun.

Sarah Wells Rolland, known for her distinctive pouring vessels, has devoted more than thirty years to studying and mastering the art of the pour. She admits she is still “completely enamored with all pots that pour,” and her passion is contagious. Sarah will have inspiring slide presentations featuring iconic pouring forms from master potters across the globe, historic treasures to modern innovations, fueling your imagination throughout the week.

True to Sarah’s teaching style, this workshop is packed with practical skill-building techniques. While it’s not designed for absolute beginners, seasoned beginners and intermediate potters who are ready to challenge themselves will feel right at home (see skill level description below).

Join Sarah and a community of enthusiastic makers as we explore the beauty, mechanics, and joyful artistry of Pots That Pour!

Class Recommendations

  • Inclusivity: We are committed to maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for everyone. We value inclusivity and kindness.
  • Footwear: For your safety, closed-toe shoes are required at all times in the studio. This protects your feet from dropped tools, clay, and other potential hazards.
  • Hair & Clothing: We recommend that long hair should be tied back or tucked into a cap, and loose clothing should be avoided. This prevents them from becoming caught in moving equipment like the potter’s wheel or slab roller.
  • Restricted Areas: Some spaces in our building are private working studios for other artists. Please enjoy only the spaces designated for HOW student use, and do not enter any other areas unless invited.
  • Nonsmoking facility: Smoking/vaping are not permitted anywhere inside our clay center.
  • Weapons-free facility: To ensure the safety and well-being of everyone in our community, firearms and weapons of any kind are strictly prohibited on our premises, whether concealed or openly carried.
